Felice and I are sharing a "share" of a CSA for the 2009 season.
The shares sold out last year, so I am happy to be able to get involved this year.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You can read lots more about it here, if you are interested.
Anyway, from June through November, every Thursday we will receive a bag full of organic fruits and vegetables from a local farm. Enough to feed a "small family." Since this is the first year we are doing this, it will be perfect to split the share between the 2 families.
I grew up eating lots of fresh veggies from the garden and I would love to expose my family to the same type of thing. Problem is, I'm not a farmer and I don't currently have a garden.
"We grow a range of new and heirloom varieties rarely seen in stores because their value lies in their flavor, not their ability to withstand the rigors of long distance shipping—varieties such as the red-skinned French Fingerling potato, the orange Persimmon tomato and the green-fleshed Sweetie #6 melon."
Sounds yummy, huh? I'm excited that we're gonna give it a try. Seems like the perfect way to feed my family some healthy, fresh, organic produce. Besides, it feels good to support the local farmer, and it's at a really reasonable price.
Another really cool thing, the CSA we are going with is linked with a grass-fed meat/poultry farm. No hormones, no antibiotics. You can check it out here. SO COOL!
Okay- I don't expect many folks to share my excitement on this venture, but I am giddy and I just wanted to share!

Mom and I joined the local CSA co-op last year...we had the most wonderful finds! I really enjoyed the squash that we got. Mom got all kinds of jams and jellies, honey and farm fresh eggs. I even ordered a tomato-basil soup once that was divine. It's fresh, local and totally worth the money!! :) Enjoy!
Yay! I'm so excited. Can't wait for all the fresh veggies!
Hi Jenni! It's good to know that you loved it. Funny how it's exciting to not know what you're gonna get. I have a feeling I may be making veggie soup when I get something I don't know how to cook. Who knows, maybe I'll even find some new favorites. =)
Felice- I'm so glad we decided to try it! Should be a fun little adventure. I'm thinking we will probably order some of the meat too.
Sounds good!! I expect you to invite us over to try out all your new recipes with all the veggies!
