Star Light, Star Bright

Okay- this gets me.

Ava is well versed in nursery rhymes, like most little ones are. We have several books full of them and she prides herself in knowing them all. So, of course, Star Light, Star Bright is a given.

When we were in Houston over Thanksgiving, we were riding in the back of Mamaw's car on the way to dinner. It was about 5 o'clock and it was just getting dark outside. Cousin Colin was in the backseat with Ava.

Out of nowhere Colin says, "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight." Ava laughed and got excited. Could Colin possibly know this rhyme to? She thought that was so cool. She proceeded to recite the rhyme aloud, giggling.

Then Colin asks, "Did you make a wish?" Ava was perplexed. She didn't know anything about this wish stuff. Colin told her that he makes a wish every night when he sees his first star. He also mentioned that the wishes are a secret and they won't come true if you tell anyone. Ava loved this idea and made her wish.

Since that night, she has made a big deal whenever she happens to notice a star. She yells for me to see her star and recites the rhyme loudly & proudly.

Fast forward a few months. It's a typical weeknight. I see Ava doing her little scurry around the living room, playing and what not. Daddy is about to get home. I am out of her direct line of vision. She skips past the french door in the family room and...wait...she does a double take. Then, freeze.

She stands there. Frozen. Hands on the glass, peering up into the darkening sky. Her long hair grazes her tushy. In her softest voice, she recites the entire rhyme and makes her wish. Not missing a beat, she's off playing again.

My heart gets all warm and fuzzy.
A sweet, little, priceless, mommy moment.

Shot

I took Dean to the doc today for a shot.
Since we were there, I asked the nurse to weigh him real quick.

19lb, 10oz (95%)

He was fully dressed, but still. This boy isn't gettin any littler, that's for sure. He has officially outgrown Ava at 1 year!! She was 19lb, 6oz at her 12 month appt. Wow, that's insane. He's just shy of 5.5 months, for goodness sakes!

Anyway, he was a trooper today. When he had his shot last month, he cried. Today after the shot, he laughed. The nurse said that's a first for her. She said she's seen them cry, scream and do nothing...but he's her first laugher!

(I get monthly B12 injections and the same nurse does them every time. Sometimes they really sting and sometimes I feel nothing.)

I think my little guy got lucky this time around.
That really helps take the sting out of it for Mommy too. =)

Mum

Do do do do.... Do do do do!!
(that's supposed to be a horn, btw)

DEAN SAID MAMA TODAY!!!!
I am so excited! So, so cute, I can't even stand it!

It was more like
Mmmmuummm, Mmmmmuuummm, Mmmmmmuummm...
and, he was crying when he said it...but still!

A little back story for ya. As I mentioned prior, Dean is teething.
Biting things, gnawing. Well, I decided to get him some teething biscuits. We gave him his first one on Saturday. We sat curiously to see what he would think of it. At first, he just made some faces and casually swished his tongue around it. Then about 15 seconds later the YUM set in. Then he really started getting after that biscuit!

Problem was, he kept dropping the darn thing. He would get SO PISSED! (please excuse my language, but mad just doesn't cut it here!)

He was growling and making noises that we have never heard him make. Who was this kid? I think we just taught our son how to throw a little fit. This is new around here. I admit, it was funny to watch, but kinda sad too. But, the boy was intent!

We were like sitting ducks, we watched him teethe the thing gone. He loved it! But, we were on constant biscuit patrol. God forbid he drop it into his lap. Seriously. (I should mention that it made a crazy mess too. Mental note to self, waterproof bib next round, for sure.)

Well, tonight we gave him another one. My, oh my! Same deal.
But, then out of his frustration came...
Mmmmmuummm, Mmmmuummmmm, Mmmmuuummm!

Yes, yes, he was crying. But, he just kept saying it.

Chet and I were looking at each other sideways. Ava caught on right way.

Chet said, "No, no, he's not saying Mama." But then it continued.
Mmmmuuummmm, Mmmmuuummm, Mmmmmmuuummm.
Come on folks, he was looking right at me!!!

We all laughed. Chet sighed. Ava's first word was Mama, too.
Sorry Dada!!

Anyway, I am a proud Mum!

Do do do do!!

(I just pulled out Ava's baby book and she said Mama on Sept 2, 2005. She was 5 months, 2 weeks old. Dean was 5 months, 1 week. So cute!)

Random Quote Saturday

Ava's special request before I left for the grocery store.

"Um, Mommy.
I would like something special from the grocery store, please.
Um, can you get me some special, holiday m&m’s.
Without chocolate.
Um, the ones for girls."

(Let me know if you come across any of these, k?
You know, for the girl who hates chocolate.)

On a Whim

Today, after we left Ava's preschool field trip to the library, we decided to stop by the mall.

On a whim, we stopped into the photo studio to get Dean's photo snapped. Ava was messy from treats on her field trip and Dean just happened to be wearing a photo-friendly outfit.

It also didn't hurt that the salesman, who was standing outside the store as we walked by, told us we could get a free 8x10 for just stopping in.

Usually the photo shoots are 30 minutes, but we only lasted 10. We're gonna go back later this weekend with Daddy and get some more pics and also pics of the 2 kiddos together. I can't wait.

But- since I have it, I thought I'd scan in my FREE 8x10. He isn't smiling, but I think it's adorable. Sometimes on a whim is so much fun!! :-)

The Inauguration

Four interesting observations.
Through the eyes of a patriotic 3 year old.
Ironically, all during the singing of My Country 'Tis of Thee.

"Is this all for OUR world?"
(as the flag was waving across the television screen and the grandeur of the moment was obvious)

"Did they say her name was Franklin?"
(excitement that Aretha could somehow be related, in some way, to one of Ava's favorite shows, Franklin)

"Mommy, that hat is gorgeous! I LOVE that bow!"
(in admiration of Aretha Franklin's ensemble)

"I feel bad that the President is gonna be leaving."
(What did she say? What does she mean? I asked. Apparently, she was just showing empathy for Mr. Bush. A bit freaky to hear at first, I must admit.)

5 Months

Dean is 5 months old today! I can't believe how fast he is growing!
As I posted prior, he's rolling and sitting. He's still jumping away in his jumparoo and spinning around in his exersaucer. His favorite song is The Itsy Bitsy Spider and he's into Peek-a-Boo nowadays too. He also has a funny bone and enjoys his tickle sessions.

Hmmm...what else is new? Let's see...
He tried cereal this month. Organic brown rice cereal, to be exact. I tasted it myself and it wasn't half bad. Sorta sweet. He seemed to like it. He made some pretty funny faces at first, but it didn't take long for him to make friends with his new spoon. We've only just begun, it will be fun exposing him to a whole variety of yummies....and some yuckies too. I can't wait to see what he thinks of avocado. If he's anything like his Mama, he's gonna love it!

What else?
Dean is teething! How do I know? Hmmm..let's see.
- Could it be the saliva waterfall that pours from his mouth like a faucet?
- Or maybe the poor, little, chubby, chapped index finger from constant gnawing?
- How 'bout the whine, followed by the aggressive fist to the mouth?
- Don't forget the swollen, tender gums.
- Or the endless supply of soaking wet bibs to wash.
Could it be? Yes, I think so. Watch out- here come the teethers! Who knows how long it'll actually be till we see a pearly white poking through.

Another thing, Dean loves to stand. He will pull himself right up to standing. He loves to hold onto my fingers and pull on up. He has really strong little legs and even takes little baby steps. It's cute and big sister gets a kick out of it.

Dean has started up in the play date circuit. I used to take Ava to story time, infant classes, play dates and various other activities. I would like to expose Dean to the same type of things, so we've been getting around while Sissy is in school. He's still little but I think this type of thing is important. Maybe a little different for Dean, since he's around Ava all the time, but it's good anyway.

Well, we still don't know what color eyes our little man will end up with. They are currently still blue. Time will tell, I suppose.

That's all I can think of.
Happy 5 Month Birthday- Dean the Machine!

Ouch

My sweet Ava burnt her fingers on the fireplace glass this afternoon.

I felt so incredibly bad for her. It was not fun. I guess she accidentally touched it. I was sitting right there on the floor in front of the fireplace, but I didn't see what happened. (I'm still working on the eyes in the back of the head thing.)

She's had a few rug burns before, and those are never fun either, but this was a whole new experience. Poor thing! The pain dance and shouting was immediate. "Oh Mommy, Oh Mommy, I touched the fireplace, Oh Mommy, Oh Mommy!! Then the tears and fear set in. "Mommy, I'm scared, Mommy, I'm scared." And the crying.

Did I mention it wasn't any fun?

We immediately went to the bathroom sink to run her fingers under the ice cold water on tap. She was staring into my eyes, crying. How do you tell your child that the pain they are feeling isn't really gonna stop anytime soon? Not soon for a 3.5 year old, anyway.

I told her to keep her fingers under the water so I could grab an icepack. She didn't want me to leave her at all, but I told her I'd be right back. In the background, Dean was starting to cry too. He absolutely hates when Ava gets upset. If she starts crying, he gets very worried and sympathetic and then he starts crying. So, now I hear them both.

I scurried to the freezer. We have a few of those soft gel ice packs, one Nemo and one princess. I grabbed the Nemo and rushed back to her. First though, I needed to take a closer look. All I saw was red. Yikes. But, no blisters. Good, at least! I could tell that it only slightly affected the inside of her index and middle finger on both hands.

When I was about 6 years old, I had a pretty bad burn on the top of my right hand. My sister was having problems with her math homework so I had the grand idea of getting my "counting disks" to help her. My sister is 6 years older than I, my counting disks weren't going to help, but I didn't realize that at the time. When I presented them to her, she wasn't really in the mood. Feeling defeated, I went to find my Mom, who was ironing. She had her back to the ironing board and I slapped my envelope filled with "counting disks" up on the surface. The hot iron fell right on my hand. OUCH! My index finger was burned the worst, it immediately started blistering in huge clear blisters. Apparently, that's where the steam holes were...and, well, they did what they do...steam. I had to go to the ER, etc, and it is something I will never forget.

Anyway, back to Ava. I was glad I didn't see any blisters. But, I felt so bad. Then she started in with the questions and the comments:
"How many minutes until it stops hurting, Mommy?"
"Will it stop before Daddy gets home from work?"
"Why won't it stop stinging so much?"
"Mommy, I'm hot and I'm cold."

I put on her favorite show and we laid down on the sofa. She was cold because of the ice pack so I covered her up with a blanket. After a while, she calmed down and started joking. Then the gel pack lost its chill and she started to get upset again. I exchanged it out for another one. All was good again.

A little more time passed and she started testing her limits. She'd lift her finger off the ice pack and see if it still hurt. It did. Eventually though, she announced that the middle fingers were all better. Then her left hand was better. Finally, her right hand followed suit. Thank goodness.

I checked her fingers tonight and there are actually 2 blisters. One on top of each index finger. I tried to snap a pic but it's hard to see. Not a proud Mommy moment and not a fun experience to add to my Mommy files. Sniff, sniff.

Little Sitter

Dean's a little sitter!

He's been working on it for a few weeks now. He's gotten pretty good at not toddling over. He'll even catch himself...just before the lean starts to take over. I've found he's most secure right after he gets out of his Bumbo seat or his Boppy pillow. When those trunk & torso muscles are all warmed up.

Anyway, I snapped a few pics to share. Not the best, but they'll do. =)

Little Sitter

Happy Birthday Stacey

Happy Birthday to You,

New Year Thoughts

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.
A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.
~Bill Vaughan

We will open the book.
Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
~T.S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.
~Benjamin Franklin
